Understanding BMI

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple calculation using a person's height and weight. The formula is BMI = kg/m² where kg is a person's weight in kilograms and m² is their height in meters squared.

BMI is a useful indicator of high body fatness and is used to screen for weight categories that may lead to health problems. However, BMI does not diagnose the body fatness or health of an individual.

Limitations of BMI

  • BMI does not distinguish between muscle mass and fat mass
  • Athletes with high muscle mass may have high BMI but low body fat
  • BMI may not be accurate for older adults who have lost muscle mass
  • BMI does not account for bone density, body composition, and racial differences

When to Consult a Doctor

If your BMI indicates you are underweight, overweight, or obese, consult with a healthcare provider to determine if you need to make lifestyle changes or if there are underlying health conditions that need to be addressed.
